While Charles was studying at the Glasgow School of Art he was introduced to two young English sisters of Scottish descent - Frances and Margaret Macdonald.

Margaret MacDonaldThe daughters of an English father and Scottish mother, they had settled in Glasgow. The meeting between Margaret and Charles was to change their lives forever. Together with his friend Herbie MacNair, they formed an alliance with the Macdonald sisters and became known as the 'Glasgow Four'.

Their artistic and romantic unions created the core of what would become known as the 'Glasgow Style'. The four shared a close artistic relationship.
They searched for new symbolic and elegant forms, leaning towards the strong lines of Art Nouveau.

In 1896 - a year considered by many to mark the height of the Glasgow Style the four were invited to exhibit at the London Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition.Margaret MacDonald

They continued to work successfully together until 1899 when Frances and MacNairmarried and moved to Liverpool. This was the year that Mackintosh started his great architectural project;the Glasgow School of Art.

In 1900 Mackintosh married Margaret Macdonald beginning a new era of collaboration between the two, that would later spread throughout the world.
